New Mexican Chest, CNM – 1

This is fine example of a Spanish colonial coffered lid chest from New Mexico. The chest is from the late 18th or early 19th century and is made to hold the family valuables.

The design is straw and corn husk applique’, a early decorative technique used in the Santa Fe area.

The chest is of pine with a cedar lining. The iron work is hand forged. Painted black with worn finish.
